Modern Drinks and Food
Modern beverages and foods have evolved and revolved around creative marketing, fancy packaging, long shelf life, provider profitability, sex appeal, sugar or sugar derived products and wow factor. We are told it is for our advantage and convenience when in reality it is better for the biotechnology, grocery store, marketing, manufacturer and transportation industries.
Modern beverages are the result of extracting the juice from fruit or creating chemical concoctions which have lots of artificial ingredients and more sugar added to make them irresistible. We all know the problems of modern fake, fast, fried and junk foods. These modern drinks and foods are making us sad, sick, stressed, stupid and tired.
Many of the beverages and foods today are loaded with excessive carbohydrates and processed and refined sugars. This is the result of civilization evolving from a roaming hunter gatherer Paleo lifestyle to a more stationary farmer and settlement based agriculture community. With the mass cultivation of beans, corn, fruits, grains like barley, rye and wheat and potatoes the diet shifted to one based on more carbohydrate rich foods.
While natural complex carbohydrates and whole grains by themselves are not necessarily totally bad for us other aspects have become unhealthy. The evolution of hybrid foods with more larger size and sugar content and the extensive processing and refining that take placed have created an abundance of refined carbohydrates and sugars that are not conducive to health.
Modern wheat has become highly hybridized and less like the ancient Kamut and Farro wheat of ancient times. As a result it has less fiber and more carbohydrates and gluten. Today most wheat is highly adulterated by bleaching, processing and refining They often add sugar to wheat products to make them taste better.
White russet baking potatoes these days are the size of small footballs. Few people eat the skin which is the most nutritious. These jumbo “bakers” are an overdose of carbohydrate that quickly turns to sugar in our blood.
Most fruit juices these days are concentrates, pasteurized and sugar spiked. Without pulp fruit juice spikes our blood sugar and provides us too many calories and no mechanism to fill up and slow down our consumption. Pasteurization destroys good bacteria, enzymes and nutrients that provide nutrient dense whole foods. Most modern fruits are highly treated with synthetic chemicals, fertilizers, herbicides and insecticides which are also unhealthy.
Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) like alfalfa, sugar beets, canola, corn, cotton and soy are unnatural and unhealthy. These Frankenfoods are disguised and hidden ingredients in most of the modern processed and refined foods we consume. They have not been proven to be safe for long term consumption by animals or humans. Unfortunately their are no current Federal government labeling laws in the US that require manufactures to disclose these GMO ingredients. Therefore it is “caveat emptor” which means “buyer beware”.
Paleo Beverages and Foods
Paleo refers to our Paleo ancestors who lived as mostly nomadic gathers and hunters. Their diet consisted of animals, berries, coconuts, fish, fruits, greens, herbs, insects, mushrooms, plants, roots, tubers, seaweeds and other wild foods.
Organic cheese and milk are options for Paleo followers. This may help prevent or at least reduce the level of antibiotics, bacteria, Bovine growth hormones, chemical additives and found in most milk products.
Instead of using wheat flour there are many Paleo substitutes. Almond, coconut , hemp and other nut and seed flours are chosen because they are not highly refined and processed products.
Grains and seeds are typically ancient grains like amaranth, chia, hemp, teff, kamut, farro, rye, and wild rice.
Wild caught fish and shellfish were consumed.
Animal products like beef, buffalo, chicken, deer, eggs, elk, pork and turkey were consumed.
