With summer temperatures reaching over 100 degrees in many parts of Texas and other states everyone can benefit from a list of refreshing beverages to cool off and energize our body. While many people believe that a cold beer, cola, energy drink, ice coffee, ice tea, juice, juice flavored beverage, lemonade or sports drink is the way to go these are often a poor choice due to the artificial ingredients and sugar. This post will offer some helpful hints on making delicious and nutritious healthy beverages for hot bodies.
I just returned from Belize where I enjoyed fresh coconut water right out of the green coconut and delicious clean well water. Due to the hot and humid weather I was consuming large amounts of well water to quench my thirst and stay hydrated. It is definitely more important to drink water than to eat when you are in a hot climate. Adding a small amount of baking soda or Celtic sea salt helps to hydrate the body well and replace electrolytes lost through perspiration. A pinch of Calcium bentonite clay also helps if you are concerned about the quality of water in another country since it is known to help purifty water.
It is common to hear people talk about how hot the weather is and what they enjoy drinking to cool off. Many people are not drinking enough water because it has no taste and they say it is boring. Then they choose a drink that has artificial additives, caffeine, coloring, fizz, flavorings, sugar or vitamins added to it because it is served, sold and sourced ice cold and sweet to help quench your thirst. Many of these ingredients can actually dehydrate you further.
The main challenge is that these expensive beverages are made with colored and flavored water that is pasteurized and transported long distances so it is unhealthy for the environment and you. You can make easy DIY healthy beverages that enhance your health while it saves you money.
DIY Healthy Beverages
Spring water can be consumed cool or as a warm tea and still be cooling and refreshing. Spring water is your best choice for a clean source of water as long as it is not contaminated from agriculture runoff or pollution. Avoid spring water in plastic bottles because it may leach compounds into the water. This is especially true of plastic water bottles that get hot.
- Prickly pear cactus fruit drink. During the fruit season you can blend up the fruit and use it for a delicious flavoring for water. It may soon be the new flavored water of the future.
- Moringa powder is made from the leaves of the moringa tree and is high in antioxidants and protein. It is great blended into smoothies and water with a little stevia or fresh fruit juices.

Water with fresh queezed lemon or lime added is easy and fast.
- Coconut water is becoming very popular and a real treat. You can do it yourself (DIY) by blending up fresh coconut and adding some natural sweetener like stevia or honey.
- Green drinks are usually a combination of various grasses, greens and great veggies in a dehydrated powder ready to be added to water.
- Herbal sun tea. Is easy to make in a glass jar set in the sun to warm the waster and steep the herbal tea. Great choices include: chamomile, cinnamon, ginger, hibiscus, peppermint and rooibos.
- Yerba Mate is a beverage make from leaves that is very popular in Brazil and other countries.
- Water with electrolytes like Emergen C is also easy and fast. You can find this in packages at Whole Foods and many other stores.
- Water with a pinch of baking soda or sea salt. Source some pure spring water or well water and add a pinch of Celtic sea salt or baking soda to enhance the alkalinity and health benefits.
