Did you know that International Permaculture Day was celebrated on Tuesday, May 3, 2022? Permaculture may be new to many people but the ideas regarding Permaculture Principles have been around for several decades and are beginning to gain many dedicated disciples and faithful followers. Permaculture is based on ethics, values, and visions for transforming the outdated monocropping, plowing, and tilling the soil farming by updating and upgrading them to organic, permaculture, and regenerative farming that is sustainable.
The goal of this blog is to share some basic education, information, and inspiration to promote the benefits of organic, permaculture, and regenerative farming to save our soil and to save our world from the destruction of the big agriculture model that is depleting the soil quality, depleting our water resources, and polluting the world.
During the current crazy coronavirus conditions, many people are seeking ways to be happier and healthier to counter the negative narrative that keeps circulating in the digital media and print media world. As a result, they are especially concerned about boosting their immune system and improving their health. One of the best ways to reduce your chance of bacterial and viral infections is to upgrade your resilience and nutrition with a healthy and holistic lifestyle. As more people become aware of bacteria and virus problems they begin to understand that germs are not the bad guys and are an integral part of our defense system and microbiome. The more we can enforce and enhance the inner terrain the greater our resiliency and resistance become. Our lifestyle and nutrition play major roles in our defense against infections and in determining overall health.
To stay happy and healthy it is important to be proactive and prevent problems before they occur. We must do our part to fuel our body with healthy food and nutrients which will keep us primed for peak performance and prevent problems. Our body requires adequate supplies of a vast array of macro-nutrients and micro-nutrients. As someone who has been buying organic for two decades and learning about and practicing permaculture principles on my property in Belize for seven years, my experience and expertise may offer helpful ideas for you to begin benefitting from adding more organic, permaculture, and renewable farming products into your life.
Eco-Friendly Farming
You may be asking or thinking why is organic, permaculture, and regenerative farming so important. Organic, permaculture, and regenerative farming are based on the science of Agroecology to produce higher yields and be more resilient to climate change than industrial agriculture. Big Agriculture takes a destructive approach to commercial farming of Genetically Engineered (GE) canola, corn, cotton, soy, and sugar beets which uses massive amounts of fossil fuels, synthetic chemicals, fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, and pesticides that cause massive environmental degradation and pollution.
Some of the main goals are to produce healthy ecosystems, healthier foods, higher yields, protect biodiversity, produce food sustainability, create resilient crops, and outperform harmful commercial industrial agriculture. While this seems like a tall order the research seems to indicate it can be done with a much smaller carbon footprint while avoiding the dangerous chemicals, fertilizers, and fossil fuels used in industrial agriculture. Using the best practices to grow nutrient-dense organic whole foods that will help keep people happier and healthier is common sense and good for people and the planet.
Path of Organic
What is organic? Organic is a labeling term that indicates an agricultural product or food (animal, poultry, or plants) has been produced through approved methods. These methods integrate biological, cultural, and mechanical practices that promote conserving biodiversity, cycling of resources, and ecological balance. Synthetic chemicals, fertilizers, genetic engineering, irradiation, pesticides, and sewage sludge, are avoided and not allowed. The Organic Consumers Association is one of the main promoters and supporters of high organic standards. Buy organic products.
Path of Permaculture Progress
What is permaculture? Permaculture is a mindset and philosophy that integrates the environment, land, people, and resources through mutually beneficial synergies and systems to replicate the closed-loop, natural, and no waste systems seen in diverse natural systems. Permaculture studies and then apply healthy and holistic solutions that are applicable in rural and urban settings. The development, planning, and planting systems include many different techniques and tools such as agriculture, animal systems, aquaculture, appropriate technology, building naturally, community development, economics, energy conservation, forestry, hydrology, waste management, and water harvesting and storing.
The word permaculture was used by Bill Mollison, to describe a blending of permanent agriculture and permanent culture with a focus on a conscious design and maintenance of agricultural ecosystems to be productive and have the diversity, resilience, and sustainability of natural ecosystems. Permaculture Day was celebrated on May 3, 2022. Buy and grow organic products.
Path of Regenerative Farming
What is regenerative farming? Regeneration farming is committed to educating the world about the importance of regenerative farming practices. This includes the ability to improve climate, improve nutrition, and preserve and protect water. Some people have heard about regenerative farming, but the message must reach many more people to reverse climate change and the proliferation of Genetically Engineered (GE) crops that use large amounts of chemical herbicides, insecticides, and pesticides as well as fossil fuels and harmful water practices.
The current focus is to determine the best practices and make sure they’re duplicated, publicized, and shared with as many people as possible. The Regeneration International farm in Mexico is promoting a regenerative farming method that uses agave (fermented), acacia, mesquite, moringa, and chickpeas to feed farm animals like goats and sheep a healthy food for less money while also rebuilding biodiversity, sequestering carbon, saving our soil and water conservation.
Regeneration farming is based on a global system of collaboration, communication, and cooperation to find and organize many productive and successful agroecology ideas and then share them worldwide. Regenerative ranching encompasses free-range animal husbandry combined with crops and is one of the fastest-growing agricultural movements and trends in the world because it works so well. Agroforestry and livestock feeding models can be less polluting and more productive than Commercial Agriculture Feedlot Operations (CAFO). Many feel regenerative farming is vital to ensure food security. Buy local. Buy organic.
